The Barbican Centre London. Here is a section dedicated just to details. Its easy to get distracted by the dynamism and power of the colossal structures as I have over the years but over time I have started to notice more of the great detailing so decided to do a survey as such of the “little things” of the Barbican. Love the way that items such as light switches and sockets are literally embedded into cast recesses within the concrete. The Barbican is not the sort of place where you casually think of adding another socket! Massively heavy concrete hatches and doors to service risers and cupboards are like something you would expect to find in the Flintstones House! The detailing is also about the wonderful finishes such as the prevalent bush hammered concrete finish that looks gorgeous on the massive circular columns in the way that the rough texture captures light and shade. Even the weather stained areas look good here, almost looking like they have been hand sprayed as graduations. This is an ongoing project so will be adding to this section over time. My first visit to the Barbican was to see a preview of the film Bladerunner in 1982 what a perfect combination! Bladerunner is still one of my favourite films of all time! If I win the Euro lottery would look for a penthouse here immediately! By Chamberlin, Powell and Bon Architects. Design started in the 1950s Built from the 1960s up until the early 1980s.
