The Morris Walk Estate, (now fully demolished) Woolwich by the LCC Architect’s Dept, 1963-1966. I had a fondness for this Estate as it appears in a few scenes in the “swinging sixties” film, Blowup, along with key scenes in the beautiful Maryon Park which is next to the estate. At the time Morris Walk was nearing completion, Its now fully demolished and ground up into piles of pulverised concrete. A huge “regeneration” project will replace it. Not sure if any building work has started yet. It was quite an experience to walk around prior to the hoarding being erected, and impending demolitions, completely silent, no people and undergrowth starting to take over, made me think of the abandoned radiation zone around Chernobyl! The estate is built using the same panel system used for the ill fated 22 storey Ronan Point which partially collapsed in 1968 after a gas explosion killing 4 people. It’s a Danish panel system, Larsen-Nielsen system, also used at the Aintree Estate, Fulham (now demolished) and the Ledbury Estate, Peckham which I have previously posted. The H shaped tower blocks are much the same at all three estates. The estate was nicely laid out on a hillside so the spaces between the blocks are interestingly tiered down the hill with varied landscapes and a good quantity of mature trees. interesting varied views were to be had through the estate. Its apparently always been badly maintained. Personally I think it had great potential rather than be flattened! But I don’t know what sort of problems these buildings had structurally etc. Too late for you to see it now, another one bites the dust… 😔
