The Churchill Gardens Estate Pimlico. One of Londons largest estates but also one of the earliest ones to be constructed after the WW2. It was built in 4 phases from 1946-1962. Its a high density estate composed mostly of varied types of blocks of flats of differing heights, 3 to 11 storeys, with a handful of terraced houses. There are also several community facilities and a long parade of shops facing onto Lupus St.. Walking around the estate the in-between spaces are pretty well planted with mature tress, shrubs & lawns which distracts you from the high density of buildings. The entire estate is within The Churchill Conservation area and six blocks were Grade II listed in 1998. Some buildings retain their original doors and windows, others have been replaced but generally quite well. The estate has aged really rather well, better than many estates built later. Designed by two young architects, Powell & Moya after winning a competition held by Westminster Council in 1946. The estate established new standards of modern accommodation including the first ever district heating system which was supplied by Battersea Power Station until 1983 through a tunnel under the Thames. I still have to add all the block names as I currently don’t have them all to hand but have attempted to indicate which phases the buildings were built during. It’s a large estate and I have a lot of photos!…More to be added shortly…
